So, the Hayden Valley wolves did actually make a brief appearance, again in the distance, but the kindly folks with "HUGE" spotting scopes gave us a nice look.. no howling though, which was a bit disappointing.. and.. it is illegal to do it yourself!! so of course we refrained.. had a few traffic jams on the drive back to the camp site (Bay bridge or something like that) caused by the plentiful bison. Early morning we were back in the valley, but apart from almost hitting a large bull Elk rubbing the velvet off his antlers amost on the road, we had no other sightings of major interest. Cooked up baked beans (nice but watery) and eggs beside the river, with bison wandering past. odd having to continually look around to se if some huge burger pattie on the hoof is sneaking up behind you. They can be VERY quiet and clearly it would smart a bit if they bumped you!
So that was Yellowstone, and off we went South for the Grand Tetons, which, it can be said, are most definetly "Grand". The drive down notable for LONG holdups for roadworks which of course are on a "BIG" scale.. nice to spot the odd deer wandering out of the forest beside the road.. and can see how they so often end up becoming part of the asphalt!
The Tetons were stunning and made for wonderful photo ops, but we continued south, deciding to head for Jackson. Lucky again, as we met moose beside the road as a consequence of not stopping for long. They fit the landscape nicely.. BIG
an aside................. a s I write this, a huge convoy of flag wavng Harleys is passing the camp, complete with police bike escort, lights and all.. hmm.. wonder what thats about!
Jackson.. quite like Queenstown, so; nice to visit, but expensive. The "Virginian" rv park was about 3 times the cost of others we've camped in, and had very tiny showers, no washing allowed outside, no drying towels outside, nothing to be tied to trees, restriction on the size of matts outside your rv, no fires, pay extra for wifi.. etc etc.. so from our point of view.. it got a large thumbs down.. of course it is the only one in town.. so no option if yu want to stop.
Jackson is the centre of "Elk country" and has huge arches made entirely of cast antlers.. oddly, I didn't photo one.. but wait.. so does Afton!
Afton.. population about 3000 or so (I think) and home to Aviat Aircraft who make Pitts Specials and Husky aircraft. Unless you knew where to look, on the main street, you'd never find them.. lots of large building, and a sign "Main Office".. seriously right on the main road on the south side of the town.. employs about 50 people, and NO SIGN! Fascinating place.. great to see the quality and pride they have in what they do. After a fish and chip lunch (look at where the nearest sea port is and figure THAT out) we were back there for an hour or so discussing rebuilds etc.. By that stage, the van was fixed.. oh. forgot.. passenger door window electrics playing up, and then the latch failed such we coud only open it from the inside!!! hmmm not so handy. .. back on 89, and South ish to Montpellier.. bye to Wyoming.. !! :(
Fabulous photos!!
